Cannot Sleep? Sleep and Recovery Peptides in the Research

Lying awake at 3am, then dragging through the next day: poor sleep quietly wrecks everything from mood to recovery.

Lying awake at 3am, then dragging through the next day: poor sleep quietly wrecks everything from mood to recovery. It is also a growing area of peptide research. Here is what the studies cover.

Why sleep breaks down

Sleep is regulated by a network of hormones and signalling molecules, including melatonin and the body clock. Stress, age and lifestyle disrupt that signalling, which is why sleep problems are so widespread. Research into sleep peptides focuses on the pathways that govern sleep depth and timing.

Peptides studied around sleep

Delta sleep-inducing peptide (DSIP) was first isolated for its association with deep, slow-wave sleep and has been studied for its effects on sleep architecture and stress responses (Graf and Kastin, review literature). Epitalon, a synthetic pineal peptide, has been researched for its role in melatonin regulation and circadian signalling (Khavinson et al.). Both are research compounds with human data still limited in scale.

What the evidence supports

The mechanisms are interesting, but the foundations of sleep still dominate the evidence: consistent timing, light exposure and reduced stimulants. In the literature, sleep peptides are studied as adjuncts within that context, not as a substitute for sleep hygiene.

The takeaway

Sleep is a regulated signal, and disrupted signalling is where the research looks. Continue with energy and metabolic peptides and recovery research.
