Description
Product overview
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a 244 amino-acid glycoprotein heterodimer composed of an α-subunit shared with LH, FSH and TSH, and a β-subunit unique to HCG. Supplied as 5000 IU lyophilised per vial. One of the most-studied gonadotropins in reproductive endocrinology research.
Research mechanism
HCG binds the luteinizing hormone receptor (LHCGR) on testicular Leydig cells and ovarian theca cells. Receptor activation triggers cAMP-driven steroidogenesis — testosterone production in males and progesterone/estradiol production in females. The structural similarity to LH makes HCG an effective LH receptor agonist with a longer plasma half-life (~24-36 hours versus LH’s ~20 minutes).
Research applications
- LH receptor pharmacology
- Hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis research
- Steroidogenesis studies in Leydig and theca cell models
- Fertility and reproductive research
- Combined research with GnRH antagonists and SERMs
Reconstitution and storage
HCG vials typically include a separate sterile water ampoule for reconstitution. If supplied without diluent, reconstitute with bacteriostatic water at 1–5 mL for working concentrations of 1000–5000 IU/mL. Refrigerate (2–8°C) immediately after reconstitution. Reconstituted HCG retains potency approximately 30 days refrigerated. Store lyophilised vial at 2–8°C until reconstitution.
